India is one of the main sources of hospitality staff for hotels across the Gulf. It has a large pool of hotel-school graduates and experienced workers from domestic hotel chains, many of whom already have Gulf experience. For hotels, the key to hiring well from India is being precise about each department's needs and screening for service standard, not just job title.
Roles commonly recruited from India
| Department | Typical roles |
|---|---|
| Food & beverage | Waiters, captains, bartenders, baristas, banquet staff |
| Kitchen | Commis, demi chef de partie, chef de partie, kitchen stewards |
| Housekeeping | Room attendants, public area attendants, laundry staff, housekeeping supervisors |
| Front office | Receptionists, guest relations, concierge, bell staff |
| Back of house | Storekeepers, maintenance technicians, security |
What to specify in your requirement
- ●Department and exact role, with the number needed for each
- ●Property category and service style (luxury, business, resort, serviced apartments)
- ●Guest-facing or back-of-house, since English and presentation requirements differ
- ●Cuisine specialisation for kitchen roles
- ●Salary, benefits (accommodation, food, transport) and contract length
- ●Required joining date, especially for a pre-opening
Screening and interviews
Good hospitality screening checks the type of property a candidate has worked in, not only their years of experience: a waiter from a five-star banquet operation and one from a casual restaurant suit different hotels. Shortlisted candidates are usually interviewed by the hotel's HR team or department heads by video call, with cooking or skills tests arranged for kitchen roles.
Recruiting for a hotel pre-opening
Pre-opening teams are a bulk requirement across several departments with a fixed date. Plan backwards from the opening date: allow for sourcing and interviews, visa and documentation processing, and travel, and bring supervisors and trainers in before line staff so they can lead training.
Documentation
Workers travelling from India for employment may need to complete Indian emigration formalities as well as the destination country's visa process, and certificates may need attestation. Requirements vary by destination and role and can change, so confirm current rules early and build them into your timeline.
Notes by Gulf country
- ●Saudi Arabia: confirm Saudization requirements and visa approvals for the roles first; many hotels in Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla are opening new properties and recruiting in bulk
- ●UAE: Dubai and Abu Dhabi hotels hire across all departments; mainland hotels process permits through MOHRE, free zone properties through their free zone authority
- ●Qatar: candidates from India complete medicals, biometrics and contract signing at a Qatar Visa Centre before travel, so book these early
- ●Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain: check nationalisation rules that may reserve some front-office roles for nationals
